Google Analytics – SEO Ranking Tool

The Google Analytics code adjustment to include SEO rankings within a custom report is incredibly useful for SEO’s or any internet marketer who wants to get an idea of their Google organic keywords for second page results or beyond.

Below is an outline of how to go about setting this up:

You will need to implement some custom code in your GATC (Google Analytics Tracking Code) as shown below. This will capture approximately 34% of Google results as rankings in custom reports.

Then, you can set up a custom report in Google Analytics. One example is shown below, but you may come up with some creative examples on your own! (If you come up with something really unique, please share with us, we would love to hear it!)



Now that you have your custom report set up, you can look at keywords by specific rankings. Below is an example of a report with all rankings showing.


When you want to look at rankings for page 2, remember that because of the way that Google AdWords and Google Places/Universal Search results show on a page, your page 2 results will start at around rank 10-16. Essentially if there are three Adwords ads before the first organic ranking. The first organic ranking for the purpose of this report will be in rank 4. In this example, we are looking at keywords for clicks on a rank 10 listing.

From this report, we can see that “contextual search engines” query in Google results in a listing towards the end of page 1 or beginning of page 2 in organic results. This is an excellent opportunity for us to target this keyword and try to push them higher onto page 1 in organic results. We can also use this report to isolate keywords that we would like to see on page one results but battling organically and expand those to the Pay-Per-Click campaign.
